Japanese silkies
Silkie hens
The very first residents of the estate, soft as silk.
Silkies were the first residents of our estate. They are very special hens that originate from Japan and are named after their fluffy look and feathers that feel like silk. If you have never petted one, the feeling is hard to describe – it is much more like stroking a bunny than an ordinary hen.
When we brought the first little flock home, we decided to name them after luxury fashion brands. Half joking, half serious – and we liked the names so much that they stuck. So we have Luis the rooster and the hens Koko, Šanel, Prada, Diva, Dior, Dolce and Tiffany.
Silkies are special not only in looks, but in their sweetness and remarkable sociability. Our favourite spring ritual is morning coffee with our "divas", as we affectionately call them.
